This evening we had a wonderful concert out in our parking lot! It was amazing, and featured a music team, the Echoes, from Rio Grande Bible Institute.
What made this evening especially incredible, however, was the opportunity it gave us as a church to present ourselves to our neighbors. Summit Bible Church has a rich history in our village, stretching across the past 100 years!! However, in recent years, general interest in having a personal relationship with God – and by extension, with other believers – has waned. We have experienced what Paul described in his letter to the Philippians.
I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
– Phil. 4:12
We live in a country where the Gospel of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for our sin is something that people don’t want to think about anymore. Instead, we live in a consumerist culture: full of people that only want to look as far as the next purchase, the next toy, the next distraction. We live in a world of people that prefer to think that they are doing “well enough”, and to think about how to acquire “the latest and greatest”.
For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
– Phil. 3:18-21
It is time that we take the Gospel back to the people that have forgotten it! It is time to once again consider ourselves as “strangers in a foreign land”. This is our call to action; will you join us?
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
– Matt. 28:19-20
